5 Steps to Fly Free

The pest management experts at Spalding Labs know that the most crucial aspect of successful fly control for commercial operations is an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. As part of the IPM, we recommend a simple five step fly control plan that really fixes the problem using several components.

Step 1: Identify The Fly

The first step to figuring out how to control your fly problem is to determine what kinds of flies are bugging you and if they are coming from your animals or another source. Different flies come from different places, and require different strategies to eliminate. Our Guide to Fly Control for Horses can help you identify the most common pesky flies and our experts can help you develop an IPM to suit your specific situation.

Step 2: Stop Future Flies With Fly Predators

Two of the most critical steps in your commercial fly control IMP is to stop flies from reproducing by cleaning up the areas where they breed (manure/rotting organic matter) and adding Fly Predators. Many operations get rid of flies around livestock by only going after adult flies, however that’s only about 15% of the population at any time. If you don’t stop the fly life cycle, you’ll be plagued all summer.

Fly Predators are an integral part of commercial fly control because they kill flies before they emerge. Using them is easy — simply sprinkle them near all manure areas every three to four weeks during warm months and, in just a few minutes, you’ve done your fly control for the month. Make Sure You Get Real Fly Predators. Some fly bugs sold under other brand names are not the same as Fly Predators. The species are different and the difference in performance can be huge!

Step 3: Control Adult Flies

Another component of your IPM will be mechanical control, or removing adult flies with traps. Commercial fly control solutions will require three different trap types as no one trap catches every fly. We offer the most effective traps, proven by USDA tests, and the best how-to use info.

Step 4: Stop Attracting Flies

Flies have a tremendous sense of smell and are attracted to barn odor (BO). Use Bye Bye Odor, a product developed by Spalding Labs, to eliminate the harmful ammonia and barn odor that attracts adult flies.

Step 5: Fly Spray Smarter

Spalding Labs’ Bye Bye Insects fly spray is the first principally Essential Oil spray that smells great and matches the performance of the best synthetic pesticide fly sprays. It repels flies naturally and safely, and can be used on people as well as horses and livestock.
